Wellfound is the talent marketplace that used to be AngelList Talent. It spun out of AngelList as an independent company in November 2022 and describes itself as the talent marketplace and AI recruiting platform for startups. By its own count, more than 27,000 startups hire on it, more than 10 million candidates have joined, and it has brokered over 100,000 hires. Posting a job is free and unlimited. Wellfound makes its money on paid job ads from $200, on seat-based recruiter tools from $135 a month, and on an Autopilot service at $500 per open role plus a placement fee.
For job seekers it is free, and it is unusually transparent for a job board. Most cards show a salary range and an equity range, either supplied by the company or estimated by Wellfound from similar roles. The filters are the best in the category: funding stage, company size, remote policy, salary, equity, visa sponsorship, actively hiring, recently funded, highly responsive, and posted in the last 24 hours. You can browse without an account. Applying needs a profile, and one profile can go to many startups.
It is also, in practice, an American board. In September 2026 its public location pages showed 14,916 open roles in the United States against 3,181 across Europe. Belgium had 45. Brussels had 23. For a global site that is real European coverage, and a fifth of the catalogue is still a fifth.
The honest difference is not size, it is what counts as a startup. Wellfound is an open platform: any company can create a profile and post, and its Trust and Safety team takes posts down afterwards if they are low quality or misstate a salary. StartupMap works the other way round. Each of its 4,569 European startups was checked by a person before it appeared, and the bar is a funding round or an accelerator, not a sign-up form. It lists 16,229 live roles, all read from the startups' own careers sites, on a map of 55 cities you can use without an account.

Better than most global boards, and not as its main business. Wellfound's public location pages listed 3,181 open roles across Europe in September 2026 against 14,916 in the United States, so roughly one role in five is European. The Europe page leads with Berlin, London, Munich, Barcelona, Dublin, Lisbon, Amsterdam and Zurich, and there are country and city pages down to Brussels, which had 23 open roles. That is real coverage. It is also thin once you leave the biggest hubs, and there is no way to see which companies are European unless a role happens to be based there. Every one of StartupMap's 4,569 startups is European; its 16,229 live roles are wherever those startups hire, a US office included, and the map is the filter.
Bottom line: Roughly one in five Wellfound roles is in Europe; on StartupMap every one of its 4,569 startups is European.
Any startup can post. A company creates a profile, posts unlimited jobs for free, and is live. Wellfound's Trust and Safety team works afterwards: its help centre says posts are unpublished for being low quality, for a missing logo or description, for pointing at the wrong company URL, or for listing a salary that is not the actual starting salary. There is no stated review before a company goes live and no requirement that it has raised money. The recently funded and top companies filters help you narrow to funded startups, but they are filters on an open catalogue. StartupMap's catalogue is closed: a startup gets in because it has raised a round or come through an accelerator, and a person has looked at it.
Bottom line: Wellfound moderates after publication; StartupMap reviews before it.
Fresh at the top, uncertain further down. Cards show a relative date and there is a last 24 hours filter, which is good. But Wellfound publishes no rule for when stale jobs come down, and its own help centre notes that a job unpublished at a company's synced applicant-tracking system does not automatically unpublish on Wellfound. Applications expire after about two weeks; listings can outlive the role. StartupMap works from the other end: every role is read from the startup's own careers site and re-synced nightly, so a job closed at the source disappears the next morning, and a startup's hiring status on the map reflects roles that exist today. 1,738 startups currently show at least one live role.
Bottom line: On Wellfound a closed job can stay listed; on StartupMap it is gone by the next morning.
