AmphiStar is a Ghent-based biotech and circular bioeconomy startup founded in 2021 as a spin-off from Ghent University and the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant that uses patented microbial fermentation to convert biobased waste and side streams into high-performance, biodegradable biosurfactants for use in personal care, home care, industrial cleaning, textiles and agrochemical formulations; it has raised multiple strategic funding tranches including a €6 M capital injection from European Circular Bioeconomy Fund, Qbic III and FFTF in 2024 and a €12.5 M European Innovation Council award in 2025 to scale industrial production and commercialise its 100 % waste-based biosurfactant portfolio while partnering with global ingredients companies to expand into North American markets.
