Barocal is a spin-out from the University of Cambridge commercializing efficient, refrigerant-gas-free cooling and heating technology. The company develops next-generation solid-state climate control systems that replace highly polluting, conventional greenhouse gas refrigerants with organic barocaloric materials, specifically plastic crystals. These materials release and absorb heat when subjected to shifting pressure, creating an environmentally friendly alternative for HVAC, data center cooling, and commercial refrigeration. The company won the $1 million TERA-Award in 2025 and secured a €2.45 million grant from the European Innovation Council Accelerator program in late 2024.
