Enifer

Series B · Biotech · Espoo, Finland · Founded 2020 · 11–50 employees

Enifer is a Finnish biotech startup that revived the PEKILO® mycoprotein technology, originally developed in the 1970s by the Finnish forest industry. The company harnesses fungal fermentation to upcycle agrifood industry side streams into nutritious mycoprotein ingredients, producing a fungi-based protein with neutral taste and color that contains up to 50% protein and 35% fiber. Enifer recently secured €36M in funding to build the world's first commercial-scale mycoprotein factory from side stream raw materials, which will produce up to 3,000 tons annually—enough protein for 40,000 people with 20 times lower carbon emissions than traditional animal protein. The company has established partnerships with major global players including Skretting, Purina, and Valio, and expects EU novel food approval by 2026.
