Nuclear Turbines is a Manchester-based deep-tech startup developing compact nuclear power systems that pair an advanced modular reactor directly with a commercial gas turbine, bypassing traditional steam infrastructure entirely. Spun out of BAE Systems' Launchpad initiative, it was co-founded by former BAE Systems principal engineer Jeremy Owston and University of Manchester nuclear engineering professor Tim Abram. The company claims its approach can reduce electricity costs to one-fifth of current prices by using high-temperature gas turbine technology normally found in jet engines. In July 2026, the company emerged from stealth after raising a £15 million foundational round led by IQ Capital, with participation from Rhapsody Venture Partners, Zero Carbon Capital, and Empirical Ventures. The funding will be used to validate the reactor design, build large-scale test rigs, and manufacture first fuel elements. Nuclear Turbines is actively hiring across engineering, operations, and marketing roles in the North West of England.
